HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE SIMPLE FELT TREES?

Felt Christmas tree

Make a cone out of the paper, making sure the bottom is flat and it stands on its own. Check out this video by Handimania to make a perfect paper cone!

Cut simple leaf shapes from the felt. This can be done freehand, that’s how I did it. If you would like you can cut a template out of cardboard and use it to cut all the leaves.

Paper cone and felt leaves
The Paper cone and felt leaves are ready

Once the leaves are cut, all you have to do is start gluing them all around the paper cone. Make sure they overlap, so you do not see the paper cone.

For the bottom, the leaves are half on the cone and the rest is out, this makes it easier for the cone to stand and also for the cone to be completely covered with leaves.

Paper cone with felt leaves
The paper cone with the first layer of felt leaves

Keep gluing the leaves until the entire cone is covered. Start from the bottom to the top.

Felt Christmas tree
All the leaves glued onto the paper cone

Decorate with sequins, ribbon, buttons, tinsel, etc (optional)

That’s it! Display your felt trees

Felt Christmas Tree
The felt Christmas tree is all done!

NOTES:

You can use thick felt which will last longer, however, I used the regular felt that I got in Micheals.

If you do not want to bother with making your own cone, you can use styrofoam cones found in craft stores, this makes your project more expensive though.

You can glue a star or bow on top of the tree.

There are many ways to decorate your tree by using sequins, ribbon, tinsel, felt, beads, etc.

Easy Felt Birds

Felt birds

These easy felt birds are perfect for spring! You can make them in bright colors and use them in a garland or in a child’s room.

They are so easy to make and you can practice your embroidery skills with small designs on them. But that is completely optional!

I actually cut out the shape from the felt without a guide, but I recommend using a template.

If you have a Cricut, it makes your life easier by cutting out the shape for you. I’ve heard it is a really useful gadget if you are into DIYs.

Anyway, I am all about using what you have, so you do not need any fancy gadgets to make these cute little birds!

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE FELT BIRDS?

Felt birdsCut out 2 bird shapes from each piece of felt. I found a free template here if you are interested. Or if you are good at drawing, you could just draw the bird shape on the felt!

The number of bird shapes will depend on how many birds you are making.  If you making a garland I think you need at least 8 birds, hence you will need 16 shapes. ( 2 of each color)

On one bird shape, using embroidery thread and needle, stitch an eye. If you like you can embroider some flowers or anything you like.  ( I am still working on my embroidery skills, so mine are not perfect!)

Next, start stitching the 2 bird shapes together using a blanket stitch or running stitch. If you need help with these stitches, the website The Sprucecrafts has very good tutorials. Click here to visit.

Add the beak ( a triangular piece of felt) in between the 2 bird shapes and stitch over it connecting it to the main body of the bird.

Just before you finish, Stuff the bird with some polyfill or cotton. Do not overstuff. Continue stitching and you are done!

NOTES:

If you are making a garland, make the others and string them on a piece of jute twine ( yarn/string/ribbon are other options) using a yarn needle.

You can even hand the birds vertically for a nice wall hanging. Here is a picture I found on Pinterest.

You can use safety eyes instead of stitching the eyes if you prefer.

These little birds can even be used as a little pretend play toy for kids.

For the green bird pictured above, I did stitch all around the beak, but that is not necessary. I learned from trial and error!

If you are interested in embroidery, please take a look at my post – Small Embroidery Projects.

Felt Christmas Tree Garland

Felt Christmas Tree Garland

This Felt Christmas Tree Garland is very easy to make and looks beautiful hanging on a mantle, window, or shelf.

Christmas is a little over a month away! Can you believe it?! I certainly cannot, this year seems to have flown by!

I usually do not put up our Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving but this year for some reason my son insisted we put our decorations up early, now who can refuse a 5-year-old?! So we pulled out all our decorations and it definitely feels like Christmas around here. Do you put up your Christmas decorations so early? I would love to know if you do!

This garland is something you can make and use for years to come. Instead of spending money on something readymade, DIY this garland (this probably cost me less than $5!) You will certainly hang this garland up with pride and use it year after year!

WHAT SUPPLIES DO YOU NEED TO MAKE THIS FELT CHRISTMAS TREE GARLAND?

Green Felt sheets

Needle and Thread

Jute twine

Glue gun and glue sticks

HOW DO YOU MAKE THIS FELT CHRISTMAS TREE GARLAND?

Make a template of the 2 Christmas tree shapes out of cardboard. I just drew them out by hand, but you can find a template here.

I chose 2 types of trees, Cut 8 trees of each type out of the felt, that is a total of 16. It depends on how long you want your garland. The one that I made is 55 inches long.

On one of the felt shapes, you can embroider little snowflakes. Or any design you wish. I embroidered little snowflakes using white thread.

Felt Christmas Tree Garland

Next, you stitch your trees together using blanket stitch. Here is a YouTube video by Red Ted Art showing how to do the blanket stitch. I used a similar color thread. If you wish you can use a contrasting color as well.

Do this with all the 16 pieces so you get 8 trees, 4 of each type.

To make them into a garland I cut one long piece of jute string (55 inches). Then cut small pieces of jute string to make a loop at the back of the trees using a hot glue gun just like you see in the picture below.

Felt Christmas Tree Garland back

Put all your trees onto the long string. Then hang up your garland and move the trees around to your liking.

That’s it! A simple and cute Christmas Tree Felt Garland!

Felt Christmas Tree Garland

NOTES:

The garland can be adjusted to any size by adding or reducing the number of trees and string.

An alternative to stitching the 2 trees together is using hot glue. But stitching them together gives it a nice look.

You can change the color of the trees to match your Christmas colors.

To hang the garland I use packing tape as it is much stronger than regular cello tape or scotch tape.

Another option is that you could use some ribbon instead of string to hang your garland.

With Christmas coming soon, you can make yourself this cute felt garland to decorate your home. It is simple and will brighten up any corner of your home!

Easy DIY Felt Pumpkins

diy easy felt pumpkins

These Easy DIY Felt Pumpkins are simple and quick to make. Use them around your home to decorate for fall and brighten up your space!

This is my 3rd post featuring pumpkins, I think I’m not going bananas but I am definitely going pumpkins! 🤣

easy diy felt pumpkins

If you would like to see my other pumpkin posts, here they are:

Thumbtack Pumpkins

Mini Crochet Pumpkins

Now onto these Felt Pumpkins. I had some pumpkins from the dollar store which needed a make-over.

Of course, the first place I look is Pinterest for ideas, this one really caught my eye: yarn pumpkins.  Aren’t they gorgeous?    ( Have a look at them by clicking the link) However, I didn’t have any nice colors of yarn for the pumpkins and was not about to go out to buy yarn.

Felt Pumpkins was an option as I had lots of felt. Most of the ideas out there used whole sheets of felt and others used cut-out leaves or shapes.

So I had to think of my own idea, eventually, I came up with these Felt Pumpkins. They are really easy to do and can be made in lots of colors.

WHAT SUPPLIES DO YOU NEED FOR THESE EASY DIY FELT PUMPKINS?

Foam pumpkins

Paint, paintbrush

Scissors

Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Wooden Sticks ( I just gathered these from my garden)

Here are some finds on Amazon for this project:

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE EASY DIY FELT PUMPKINS?

  • First, take off all the flowers or leaves from the foam pumpkin.
  • Next, make a little hole on the top for the stem.
  • After that paint the pumpkins the same color, I chose white but you can choose whatever color you want.
  • Cut strips of felt less than an inch wide, with a length of about 7 to 8 inches. I ended up needing about 30 strips to cover each pumpkin.
  • Using your hot glue gun, stick the strips of felt onto the pumpkin, overlapping them whenever necessary.
  • When the pumpkin is fully covered with strips, add the stem. Basically, glue a stick onto the top. ( I actually made a hole right through the pumpkin, as I had planned something else which didn’t work, in the end, the stick was wrapped with felt to make sure it fit in the hole)
  • Cut a small circle, make a small hole in the center, and glue it around the stick.
  • Cut out a pumpkin leaf from green felt and a thin strip for the tendril. You can find a pumpkin leaf template here.
  • Hot glue both of them around the stem.
  • Optional – Cut another circle and glue at the bottom to cover up any gaps.
  • Your felt Pumpkins are ready!

NOTES:

You can use regular glue instead of a hot glue gun.

For the stem, use rolled-up brown felt instead of a stick. Another option is a cinnamon stick.

Roll a thin strip of felt around a pencil to get it to make that twirly shape needed for the tendril.

Fall Felt Leaf Garland

Felt Fall Leaf Garland

This Fall Felt Leaf Garland will give your home a nice touch this fall. Simple to make and easy on the budget!

It’s that time of year here in the US when everyone starts thinking about the changing seasons. Fall is a favorite time of year for many. The cooler temperatures, the falling leaves, pumpkins, apples, peaches, etc! Like they say in Texas, Happy Fall Y’all!!

Decorating for fall has become quite common nowadays. I suppose it just makes your home feel warm and cozy when it’s getting cooler outside.

Here is my DIY fall garland, it is super easy to make! I made it in under 45 minutes. Felt is one of my favorite craft materials to work with. It comes in beautiful colors and it’s really easy to cut, and it does not fray. Not to forget it is just around 33 cents a sheet, so you do not have to spend too much money.

How do you make this Fall Felt Leaf Garland?

Cut out the leaves from the felt sheets. I used 10 different fall colors. You can use an actual leaf as I did ( I used a magnolia leaf from my garden) or you can use any free leaf template which is available online. You can find a template and 4 easy cute fall garlands here at abeautifulmess.com.

 Felt Fall Leaf Garland

Next, poke a hole at the top of two felt leaves( I used a pin), then using a yarn needle threaded with the jute twine string both the leaves together.

Do the same for all the leaves, so you will have 5 sets of 2 leaves each.

After that, we add the beads. I thought the beads give it a nice farmhouse touch! To make it easier use cello tape on the ends and push the beads through till they rest on top of the leaves. I used one small bead, one medium bead, and a small one again.

Measure the length of thick jute twine for your garland. Tie the leaves at different intervals. I just tied them loosely so they could be moved when the garland is hung up. It’s optional to cut off the extra string but I just left it on to add to the rustic look.

 Felt Fall Leaf Garland

That’s it, you can hang up your garland on your mantle, on a door, on a mirror, a shelf, etc

Felt Fall Leaf Garland

NOTES:

The garland can be made any length you want. I made it to fit my mantle. Just add more leaves to make it longer or less to make it shorter.

The colors can be mixed and matched, it is entirely up to you.

You can go the extra mile and embroider the leaves, check out this beautiful fall leaf garland from LiaGriffith.com

DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments

It’s Christmas in August!!! Since I missed Christmas in July I am improvising! I guess it’s not too early to be thinking about Christmas!

These DIY Felt Ornaments are so easy to make and will look cute hanging on your tree or even as a garland. Christmas is definitely my favorite time of year. Decorating the house and putting up the tree is the most fun part! So, even though it is still August, I thought I can post this now, so there is lots of time to DIY these Felt Ornaments in time for Christmas!!

You can make these felt ornaments in no time and in whatever color scheme you prefer. They are easy to make and are pretty inexpensive. You can even get gold or silver embroidery thread to make it more sparkly and festive!

What are the Supplies needed for these DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments?

DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments supplies

Felt sheets in colors of your choice – I got mine at Walmart for just 33c a sheet. But apparently, it is cheaper on Amazon!

Embroidery thread

Needle

Marker (to draw the shape on the felt)

Scissors

Thread or ribbon (for creating the hanging loop)

Felt scraps (for stuffing the ornament)

Cookie cutters (optional but recommended)

Here are my Amazon picks for this project:

(Disclaimer: These are affiliate links, which means if you buy any of these recommended products, I will receive a small commission from Amazon at no extra cost to you. Please know that I only recommend products that I love and know to be of great quality. Thank you for your support!)

How do you make these DIY Felt Ornaments?

  • Place the cookie cutter on your felt sheet and draw the outline with a marker. To get 2 of the same shape, just fold the felt so that you have 2 pieces of felt, the one that has the shape drawn and another underneath. That way you will get 2 of the same shape when you cut them out.
DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments
Trace shapes with a cookie cutter and cut them out. (2 of each shape)
  • Next, you have to stitch whatever pattern you want on the felt shapes. I stitched on both the sides that will be facing out. You can stitch only on one side to save time if you prefer. (Make sure that the marker cannot be seen, make that side the inside of the ornament.)
DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments
Embroider your design with thread on 2 sides. (or one if you prefer)
  • Stitch both the shapes together using blanket stitch. Here is a great tutorial from thesprucecrafts.com on the blanket stitch.
  • When coming to the point where you need to attach the hanging loop, using a hot glue gun stick the bottom part of the loop in between the 2 shapes of felt. (I made a knot at the bottom of the thread). Continue stitching, towards the end, stuff the shape with little pieces of cut-up felt.
DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments
Stitch the 2 shapes together using blanket stitch, glue the hanging loop in between the 2 shapes before stitching.
  • Continue stitching till the end. Your felt ornaments are ready!

DIY Felt Christmas Ornaments

Notes:

  • If you do not have Cookie cutters, you can draw or print out templates onto cardboard and use that to draw your shapes on the felt. There are lots of free templates available online.
  • I used all 6 strands of the embroidery thread. Feel free to use just 3.
  • It does take a lot of practice to get the blanket stitch right. As you can tell I am still practicing as I am not very good at it!
  • Using a thin ribbon instead of a thread for the hanging loop would be easier. I found the thread that I used was not easy to work with.
  • To make it even easier you can use a glue gun on the edges to glue the shapes together. To make the edges look neater, cut them with pinking shears.
  • Another option instead of embroidery is using sequins or beads. I have not personally tried it but I think it might look good.
  • There are many options that you can make like stockings, snowman, holly, poinsettia, bauble, Santa, reindeer, candy cane, etc.

DIY Paper Boxes and Felt Baskets for Organizing!

Paper boxes and felt baskets for organizing.

These DIY Paper Boxes and Felt Baskets for Organizing are so easy and useful!

Make these to organize your life! Have you heard of the phrase ‘Everything in its place and a place for everything? This is probably the number one principle of being organized, having a place for everything in your home.

Everyone has that dreaded junk drawer, where all the odds and ends gather and makes it a big mess! I know because I have one of those! 😂

You can certainly buy all the fancy organizers available, but they usually come in standard sizes and compartments. Not to forget by the end of it, you end up spending more than you want to or need to! 😬

These DIY bowls and boxes are totally customizable to your space. And they can be made in any size or color, and they save you lots of money!

In this post, I will show you how I made these paper boxes and felt bowls. I am also working on some crochet baskets and bowls which are easy and gorgeous for organizing, so that’s coming soon!

Let’s see how to make these DIY Paper Boxes and Felt Baskets for Organizing:

DIY Paper boxes for organizing:

These paper boxes can be made in any size just following the simple pattern. Your junk drawer can be transformed with these simple boxes!

What supplies do you need?

(Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links, which means if you buy any of these recommended products, I will receive a small commission from Amazon at no extra cost to you. Please know that I only recommend products that I love and know to be of great quality. Thank you for your support.)

How do you make these paper boxes?

I am showing you how I made this square box, the finished size is 12 by 12 cms.

  • Cut a square which is 18cms by 18cms
  • Measure 3 inches on all sides and draw lines. The inner square should be 12cms by 12cms.
  • So that will be the size of your box.
  • Now using a ruler bend all four sides so that they are folded along the lines.
  • Use scissors and cut the 4 corners diagonally as shown in the picture.
  • Now fold the edges on all sides so that it’s easier to do when you glue these down.
  • Now put glue on the corners and glue as shown.
  • Once all the corners are glued your box is ready.

Seriously these take less than 10 minutes to make! Now make a whole lot and organize your dreaded junk drawer into something awesome! 😊

Paper boxes with things organized

Notes:

For different sizes, just make the square bigger or smaller, and follow the same directions.

For rectangular boxes: just trace the rectangle on the paper, add 2 or 3 inches on all sides. (This will determine the height of the walls of your box). Then follow the same directions.

If you want the pattern on the inside of the boxes, just flip the paper and make it.

You can increase or decrease the height of your box, by adding that many cms/ inches on all sides.

DIY Felt baskets for organizing:

These felt baskets are easy to make. You have to use thicker felt and not the ordinary felt you usually find at the store.

What supplies do you need?

Thick Felt sheets

Yarn or Jute twine

Scissors

Marker

Yarn Needle

Glue gun

How do you make these felt baskets?

Felt Basket 1

Felt basket for organizing

  • Cut out a rectangle from your felt with these measurements 26 * 29.5 inches.
  • Make a template on ordinary paper. I used a paper with the same measurements that are 26 inches by 29.5 inches.
  • The base will be 18 * 18 cms. Now on your template, on the side which is 26 cms. Draw 2 lines 4 cms from the sides, on both sides. You can check this pin that shows a diagram with the measurements.
Paper template for felt bowl
This is what the paper template will look like.
  • On the side that is 29.5, draw a line 5.5cms from the sides.
  • You will end up with a square of 18cms inside that is your base.
  • Now cut as shown in the picture.
  • Place this template on top of your felt piece and cut it out.
  • All you have to do now is punch holes on the four semi-circular corners. This does take a bit of hand strength! Even then you might end up using scissors to cut the small holes out.
Felt bowl template
Felt cut according to template and holes punched.
  • Now measure a piece of yarn or string 16 to inches. Thread it through a yarn needle.
  • Fold the basket as seen in the picture below, needle the yarn through both holes, and tie the yarn in front to secure.
  • Repeat on the other side. Your felt basket is ready.
  • If you find you like to watch and learn, you can check out this video by Cristina Ramirez, she makes a similar basket.

DIY Felt basket

I only had this thick green felt, but if you use a nice neutral color like grey, off-white, brown, it would look really good. Maybe I will use these at Christmas time!

Felt basket 2

DIY Felt basket

This felt basket is much easier to do. It follows the same concept of the paper boxes, except that one of the corner pieces is cut in every corner as seen in the picture. This is just so that it’s not that bulky.

  • Cut a square piece of felt measuring 16 by 16 cm.
  • Mark 4 dots on all 4 corners 3cms from the edges.
  • Using scissors, cut the corners diagonally.
  • Cut out half of the corner like seen in the picture.
Felt basket 2
Cut corners and ready to be glued.
  • Now using hot glue, glue the 4 corners on the outside and make it into a basket.

That’s it your felt basket is ready!

Easiest felt flower tutorial

Felt flower diy

I love DIY and wanted to share this DIY felt flower tutorial with all of you, I call this the easiest felt flower tutorial because it really is! Just read on to find out why!

Felt flowers are so easy to make and can make great home decor. Felt comes in lots of beautiful colors, it is very inexpensive also. In Walmart, it is available for 33 cents a sheet. I’m sure if you buy it in bulk, you can get it even cheaper.

You can find felt sheets in any craft store. Amazon also has a wide variety of colors in felt. I love working with felt, it’s soft and can be made into so many beautiful and useful things.

There are many different kinds of flowers that you can make using felt. And all of them are gorgeous! I just chose the easiest one to share.

These are easy enough for kids to make, provided they are old enough to handle a hot glue gun. I am guessing that fabric glue could be used too but I have not tried. Please do let me know if you have tried and it worked for you.

Make them in any color and even different sizes. I love these because they can be used to make beautiful wreaths, if you add a stem you can use them in flower vases. I just gathered sticks from my backyard and used them as stems.

Red and white felt flowers in vase

Supplies needed for the felt flower DIY:

Felt in different colors

Scissors

Hot glue glue

If you are adding stems, you could just gather some sticks from your garden as I did!

Other options that would work are floral wire or pipe cleaners.

How do you make them?

  1. Cut out rectangular shapes from your felt sheet. Small rectangles will yield small flowers, bigger rectangles will yield bigger flowers.

2.Fold the rectangle in half lengthwise. Using the glue gun, glue down the open side of the rectangle.

3.Using scissors cut lines at regular intervals on the folded side but do not cut all the way, leave about 1/2 inch on the other side.

4.From one side, start rolling your rectangle gluing as you go.

5.To attach the stem, glue it as you start rolling in the above step. Or you could just add some glue on one end of the stick/pipe cleaner/wire and stick it in the base of the flower.

Notes

If you do not use a stem, glue your roses onto your wreath, picture frame, or whatever you make.

That’s it! Easy and beautiful!
