Green Masala Fish

Hello Everyone!

Hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas with your family.

It has been almost 2 months since I posted a recipe! Well to tell you the truth I have been so focused on opening my Etsy shop that cooking has taken a backseat! But hopefully, now that my shop is opened, that will change a little.
However, I have to mention that I have enjoyed posting about my crochet, macrame, and DIYs though! I do hope that you enjoyed reading about my different projects!

Thank you so much for your continued support of my little blog, I do appreciate your presence here! Sending lots of love to all of you!

Let’s get on with the recipe now! What is Green Masala fish fry?

This Green Masala Fish is a tasty recipe that is from the Mangalore Ladies Club cookbook. For those who don’t know Mangalore is a beautiful coastal town in South India. My grandmother lives there and has been there for most of her life. She is an excellent cook and has played a huge role in the Mangalore Ladies club including being the President of the club! They publish a cookbook every year that has amazing recipes.

Green masala fish fry is a baked version in the cookbook, but I just made it on the stovetop as I was too lazy to turn on my oven! The green color comes from cilantro and green chilies. You can make it as spicy as you want by adding more green chilies. But remember, the spice also comes from peppercorns. Do try out this different recipe using fish fillets.

WHAT ARE THE INGREDIENTS FOR THIS GREEN MASALA FISH?

Ingredients for green masala fishFish ( I used Tilapia)

Onion – I used a yellow onion

Ginger

Garlic

Green chilies

Vinegar – I used white vinegar but you can use any cooking vinegar

Tamarind paste – is available at any Indian grocery store.

Salt

Cumin seeds

Peppercorns

Turmeric powder

HOW DO MAKE THIS GREEN MASALA FISH?

Green masala fish

Blend the cilantro, ginger, garlic, green chili, cumin seeds, peppercorns, turmeric powder, and vinegar to a paste. Keep this aside. ( I used only 1 green chili in the entire dish even though you do see 2 in the above picture)

Chop one onion.

Fry the onion in oil till slightly brown. Add the ground paste, tamarind, and salt.  Fry till the raw smell goes away and the oil floats on top.

Add the fish pieces, put some of the green masala on top of the fish. Cover with a lid and cook.

After about 5 to 8 minutes the fish should be cooked. Drizzle some tomato ketchup on top or garnish with tomato slices and cilantro.

That’s it! Your delicious green masala fish is ready!

NOTES:

Any kind of fish can be used, but I suggest a fish with fewer bones or boneless filets.

The masala does not have to be smooth, it can be a little coarse. You can use a little water to grind it.

If you wish to make it like in the original recipe, make the masala on the stove-top, next in an oven-proof dish put 2 tablespoons of the masala, place the fish fillets on top. Add the rest of the masala on top, drizzle with tomato ketchup and oil, bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

This dish can be eaten with bread, rice, or paratha. Try it with my Instant Pot Peas Pulao or 2 ingredient Naan!

Air Fryer Salmon Fish Fry

Air fryer Salmon fish

Air Fryer Salmon Fish Fry is a real favorite in my house, my kids absolutely love it.

The Air fryer is one of my favorite gadgets in the kitchen. Apart from the fact that you can fry using just a little oil, it gets the job done really fast! That’s a win in anyone’s kitchen, don’t you agree?!

If you do not have one, I highly recommend the Cosori Air Fryer.

(The above link is an affiliate link, meaning that if you decide to buy the product through my link, I will earn a small commission from Amazon at no extra cost to you. Please know that I only recommend products that I love and know to be of great quality. Thanks for your support)

Salmon is one of the tastiest types of fish that I have ever tried. It is a firm fish that stands up well when air-fried, it does not fall apart easily.

The other options that you could try are kingfish, halibut, or Mahi-mahi. Any firm fish is best.

The marinade is a few basic spices, yogurt, ginger garlic paste, salt to taste, and lime juice.

It’s best to marinate at least for an hour, but I have even air-fried the fish immediately, and it tasted good too!

Another option is marinating and freezing the fish, so you have it on hand. You could just thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and air fry like normal.

You could leave the skin on if you got it with skin. After it’s fried, the skin peels off easily. If you like eating the skin you could do so but we prefer to take the skin off.

How to make this Air fryer Salmon Fish Fry:

Turn on the air fryer to 350 degrees (F). Drizzle some oil ( around 1 tbsp) on the marinated fish pieces. You can use olive oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, or coconut oil.

Place the fish in the air fryer basket using tongs.

Make sure you do not put more than 4 pieces of fish, so there is enough air to circulate around them. Close the air fryer.

Cook for 10 minutes, turn the fish pieces in between. Once done gently remove fish from the basket, your delicious air-fried fish is ready!

The fish is so flaky and juicy. My whole family loves this air-fried fish, it is on the menu every single week!

Salmon fish fry can be eaten just as a snack, eat it with rice and dal,  eat it in a taco, pita bread, paratha, naan, etc.

My favorite is eating it with avocado salad. So delicious!

Air Fryer Salmon Fish Fry

Salmon fish marinated in a spicy marinade and air fried
Course Main Course
Cuisine Indian
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 6 Medium slices of salmon fish
  • 2 tbsp Whole milk yogurt
  • 1 tsp Ginger garlic paste
  • Juice of 1/2 lime

Spices

  • 1 tsp kashmiri chilli powder use extra if you like it spicy
  • ½ tsp Coriander powder
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Salt or to taste

Instructions

  • Wash and pat dry the fish pieces.
  • Mix the rest of the ingredients for the marinade. It will be a nice red color because of the kashmiri chilli powder. Do not add water, the yogurt and lime juice is enough to mix it well.
  • Add this marinade to the fish pieces and mix well so all the pieces are coated well.
  • Cover it and keep it in the refrigerator for an hour. If you do not have time to let the marinated fish sit you can fry it immediately too.
  • When ready to fry, drizzle about 1 tbsp oil all over the fish. Mix it. Place around 3 or 4 pieces of fish in your air fryer basket. Do not over crowd the basket.
  • Turn on the air fryer at 350°, and let the fish cook for 10 minutes turning once in between.
  • Once done remove from the air fryer basket. Garnish with onion rings.

Notes

Depending on the size of the fish pieces you might need to add less or more time.
Thinner slices will be done sooner than the thicker ones. Keep an eye on them so they do not burn
If you do not have an air fryer, you could still pan fry these or bake in an oven.
