Macrame Bookmarks

Macrame Bookmarks are easy to make. You need to know a few basic knots and it uses a little cord. So, it is such a quick project.

When I was making these bookmarks my younger daughter said to me, “No one reads books anymore!”. Well, I beg to differ, I think lots of people read books, I hope I am not wrong! Leave me a comment if you still read books. I need to know if I am right or wrong!!

So anyway for all of you who read books, thank you! It’s definitely a different experience reading a book. Now, let’s see how to make these beautiful macrame bookmarks.

WHAT SUPPLIES DO YOU NEED FOR THESE MACRAME BOOKMARKS?

Soft cotton cord 2mm or 3 mm ( I got mine from Ganxxet)

Scissors (My scissors and brush are from MissKnottiemacrame)

Brush/comb

Giant paper clips (optional)

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE MACRAME BOOKMARKS?

DIAMOND PATTERN BOOKMARK:

Secure about a 10inch cord on your table/ work surface using tape.

Cut 4 lengths of cord to 150cms each.

Attach these macrame cords using a larks head knot onto the holding cord.

Make a diamond pattern using diagonal clove hitch knots on both sides. Then make a square knot in the center. Continue making the diamond pattern to complete your first diamond.

Continue with this pattern for the length you desire. I made about 5 diamonds

In the end, tie the remaining cords together with a gathering knot. Trim the ends. And brush out the cords.

To finish it, take the holding cord off the table and tie the 2 ends together to make a regular knot. Make another knot higher up and cut the excess cords.

That’s it your beautiful bookmark is ready!

It’s easy to make and looks pretty in your books and serves a purpose!

I found this YouTube tutorial which is similar to the pattern I used.

PAPER CLIP BOOKMARKS:

I found these giant paper clips at Hobby Lobby. This is not my idea, I have seen these paper clip bookmarks in some Etsy shops and on Pinterest. The patterns that I made on these are just me experimenting with the knots I have learned. For all these 3 giant paper clip bookmarks, I used 3mm cords cut to approximately 30cms.

The first pattern is made by attaching 4 cords with reverse larks head knots and then making clove hitch knots on both sides. This is similar to the keychain pattern that I shared. You can check it out here.

The second pattern is a flower pattern, you can find the tutorial on YouTube by Soulful Notions. I have not done the exact pattern she showed but modified it a bit. I added 2 square knots below the flower. But you can tie the cords with a gathering knot at the end too as she shows in her video.

Finally, the third pattern is made by attaching 3 cords with larks head knots to the paper clip. Tie a square knot in the middle. Then make a V pattern tying diagonal clove hitch knots for two rows. Cut extra cords and brush out your fringes. You can find a similar pattern on YouTube by Holmmade Macrame.

Easy Macrame Coasters

These easy Macrame coasters will be a beautiful addition to your home, no matter what style your home is decorated in. They are simple yet stylish!

They can be used for many different things not just your tea or coffee cups! Use them for keeping your candles, vases, plants, etc.

You can customize the size just by using longer cords. So the size is up to you and what you need it for.

They are really easy to do as the entire piece is just square knots. Even though it is simple, it does take a while to do. It took me about an hour or so to make one. But the end result is so worth it! Don’t you think? 😊

The things that I did differently were:

I used 3 mm cotton cords not string.

In her coaster, she did 11 rows, but in mine, I made 13 rows of square knots.

As I said earlier, you can customize the size of the coaster to your needs.

Notes:

You can leave the fringes short or long. I cut the cords first and then brush them out, and then trim them again.

Spray some water on the ends of the cords, and that makes it easier to cut your fringes.

Use a good pet brush or macrame brush for your projects.

I used packaging tape instead of painter’s tape on both ends of the holding cord.

Macrame Keychains

Macrame keychains have been on my to-do list for a long time! I recently wrote about 10 fun hobbies to do at home, you can read about them here.

One of the hobbies mentioned was macrame. Ever since then I have been researching and trying to find the best resources to learn and the best places to buy macrame cord. I want to try all things macrame, I just love how beautiful they look.

Macrame is very easy to do and once you learn just a handful of knots you can make numerous beautiful things.

After all my research I have finally come across a few YouTube channels that are very helpful.

WHAT ARE THE SUPPLIES NEEDED TO MAKE MACRAME KEYCHAINS?

Scissors and brush from MissKnottiemacrame.com

Macrame cord – after a lot of research, I bought my 3mm macrame cord from Ganxxet on Etsy. Their cord is recycled cotton and I love that it is a woman-run business. The fact that their cords are eco-friendly and very high quality really appealed to me. The colors are amazing. It’s just so difficult to choose! I wanted all of them!

Scissors – you need really sharp scissors because you will be cutting and trimming a lot of cords!

My beautiful scissors are from MissKnottiemacrame.com, I bought her macrame beginners tool kit which included the scissors, brush, and 2 S hooks.

Brush – you could use a pet- brush or comb as well. As mentioned above I bought my brush from MissKnottiemacrame.

Macrame board or just a tabletop to tape your key ring on.

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE MACRAME KEYCHAINS?

I followed the tutorial by Soulful Notions to makes these keychains. She has many tutorials for different kinds of keychains, the one I followed is the seashell pattern. Please watch her tutorial to see how it’s done. Thank you to Soulful Notions for sharing her wonderful talent with all of us!

Cut 4 lengths of 3mm cords, each 30inches or 76cms.
Cut 1 cord 10 inches long for the gathering knot.
Using a reverse larks head knot attach the 4 cords to the keychain clasp.
Starting from the 4th cord, tie double diagonal clove hitch knots across till the 1st cord.
On the other side, using the 5th cord, tie diagonal clove hitch knots across till the 8th cord.
Repeat the same step on both sides for 4 rows.
Gather the cords together and tie a gathering knot.
Brush out your cords and cut them to the length you like, or leave the cords as is.

Your keychain is ready to be attached to your keys, to a backpack, a handbag, etc.

NOTES:

I used a macrame board and pinned the keychain down before tying the knots. You could just use tape to hold the top part of the keychain down on a table so it is easier to tie the knots.
You have to use Macrame cord or rope, it does not work with yarn. (Yes I tried! lol:)
To get a nice fringe, cotton cord works best.
To cut your fringe straight, you could use a piece of tape on the cord and cut below it. A rotary cutter works too and is quicker as well.

Sometimes I wish there were more than 24 hours in a day!! I want to try all things macrame! For now, I plan to make plant hangers, wristlets, mini wall hangings, earrings, and rainbows! Of course, I will share my journey here on my blog.
